About

Hi. I'm Kevin. The Magnet Engineer. For information about me, visit About the Magnet Engineer. If you have any questions at all, Contact Me!

I originally started this online calculator as a teaching tool for a permanent magnet design seminar. It grew into something a little larger almost on its own as I got new ideas about what would make it more robust and a better teaching tool. Eventually, it had every feature I could imagine for the design and explanation of simple open-circuit shapes.

The unit convertor is especially important. It has a fairly large collection of units. Not only will it let you convert between improper units, something other online calculators rarely mention the relationship between, but it also trys to explain those units and why they may be useful; which you may not see otherwise, without many years of design experience. I've also pain-stakingly made it the most accurate magnetic units calculator I've ever seen. It does not have the common rounding errors associated with online unit conversion (some of the calculators I've seen can't even convert from a unit back to itself accurately, you see 1 = 0.99954).

The 2D Drawing and 3D Modeller aspect is quite unique. It was created as an ask from my partners at SM Magnetics. It creates a real-time PDF drawing of the magnet as well as can export a STP file of the part. We already had all the magnet dimenions, so why not create a drawing. Visit Super Magnet Man for off-the-shelf magnets and SM Magnetics for custom magnet solutions.

No version of this calculator that I control saves any of your magnet data. We don't store cookies. We keep no private information. And we don't save any of your inputs unless you send us that information. We don't store a copy of the drawing or 3D model you download. There is code for analytics that is 3rd party and I'm sure it grabs location data, etc, but we are purposefully trying to not store identifying data.

Many of the calculations, curves, and approximations are my own equations using a lot of experience and FEA results (the experimental calculations and demag curve creation especially). The rest of the calculations are general magnetics knowledge that I can not source, as they were gleaned from years of reading different papers, textbooks, and general information. I would like to give thanks to my many teachers for helping me understand and accumulate this knowledge over many years; the most important of which was Michael S. Guthrie, physicist and magnetician. Special thanks to Dr. Hui Meng for years of guidance and for special contributions to making this calculator more accurate.
